Dream of getting a job in fashion? Not sure where to start or how to get there? Knowing how to get your foot in the door can be difficult. This blog gives you some top tips to help you get a job in the fashion industry.
Have realistic expectations
Firstly, make sure you have realistic expectations. The Romcoms we have all watched, where the girl lands her dream fashion job and she goes to parties, fashion shows and is dressed head to toe in designer clothes isn’t quite what you get right away. You only get to that point with hard work, determination, and lots of work experience and internships.
Study a fashion-related degree
A fashion degree can push you in the right direction, there are so many out there! Studying something that you’re truly passionate about is important, learning and being surrounded by others who are also passionate about fashion keeps you motivated and moving in the right direction.
Internships, Internships, Internships
Gaining as much work experience as you can, will help you and your CV stand out among the thousands of other fashion graduates applying for the same roles. Work experience/ internships do take dedication alongside your degree but in the long run, it will help you become more employable. Interning also gives you the opportunity to learn the ropes and most importantly, make contacts within the area you want to work in.
Getting an internship can be tricky in itself, but make sure you’re applying for as many as you can. Not only will this make sure you are tailoring your application to each company and role, but it will also showcase your knowledge of the company and show that you are passionate about what you do.
Build your network
While at university make sure you spend time building your network. How do you do this? Make sure you’re going to as many creative/fashion-related events as you possibly can. Be confident, chatty and speak to as many people as you can. This will build your network and could open doors for you within your career.
Don’t give up
The fashion industry can be quite challenging, be prepared for rejections, and be ready to work extremely hard. Stay determined and passionate about what you want to do and you’ll get there.
