As a fashion buyer, it is your job to select pieces to feature in your clothing store or online. Before making any garment a part of your collection, you must first consider several factors such as demand, trends and prices. It is your responsibility to ensure that the items chosen will attract new and existing customers. In this blog, we are going to be talking about some of the key skills that a new wave of buyers are armed with.
As a buyer one of your main jobs is to keep an eye out for upcoming trends, understanding the fashion world around you and being able to identify which catwalk pieces will funnel down into the high street. Inevitably, as a buyer you won’t get it right all the time, you can predict what is going to work, it’s all about envisioning and using your knowledge of previous trends to steer you in the right direction. Ultimately, it is a gut feeling that you have to follow. Some key ways buyers can stay up to date with trends is by keeping an eye on the catwalk, while many of the pieces modelled are extreme versions of a trend, often we see slightly diluted versions of these in our high street. Another important thing to consider is taking note of what celebrities and influencers are wearing. Many fashion buyers take inspiration from what their favourite celebrities are wearing
Another important quality of a good buyer is being able to analyse data performance. A buyers job is to evaluate the performance of previous trends and make informed decisions as to whether to continue them or eliminate them. Working alongside the merchandise planning team to look at all the data on a buy and the KPI (key performance indicators). Having an analytical mindset is a key factor in being a buyer and allows you to establish what’s working and what’s not based on hard cold data.
Finally, organisational skills are arguably one of the most important qualities a buyer can have. Juggling many tasks can be stressful especially during the buying season and you have to be able to make snap decisions. With the number of buying seasons going up from just winter and summer to now four.
