Graduate Advice: Design and Technical Production

23 December 2021

As industry experts and experienced recruiters, we offer graduate advice to graduates applying for jobs and help them work out what they desire from a career when applying for their first job in their chosen field.

These are our top tips for graduates looking to start their careers in Design and Technical Production:

- Start with an internship within your chosen career path with a high street retailer or supplier if possible. This will allow you to gain experience and get a taste of what the job has to offer.

- If Design is your passion, then a portfolio will be key for your job hunt and application process. Include all previous work that will be relevant to show and discuss, whether that be industry experience or work from university. If you are working on personal projects, make sure they are commercial and aimed at a high-street audience. Your portfolio can be physical or digital, however, consider the accessibility options behind both; a digital one is easier to send to potential employers.

- Look for jobs with salaries between £18,000 and £21,000.

- Have your CV in PDF and Word format. Remember less is more when it comes to your CV, keep your experience concise and in a bullet point format. When applying for a design or technical job in fashion, your CV should list all computer packages you have experience using e.g. Excel, InDesign, CLOS3D, Illustrator, Gerber.

- Make sure your IT skills are impeccable.

- Be open-minded and persistent when starting your career; it’s all about getting that foot in the door.

- Keep track of all your applications and remember to follow up to encourage communication and show enthusiasm.
