4 Simple Tips for Becoming a Fashion Journalist

21 March 2023

The fashion industry is a competitive, fast-paced industry, so it can be difficult to understand where you fit in and how to get yourself a position. If you’ve found fashion journalism to be the job title you’d like, read on to discover four simple tips on how to get this role.

Fashion Journalism requires the journalist to research and write about all things fashion. They get this information from within the industry, from stylists, and fashion designers, and from attending events, photoshoots, and fashion shows. However, while networking within the fashion industry and attending shows, if you are interested in this position, you should have knowledge of fashion history, as well as the future of fashion. This is important as, as a writer, you should be able to refer to past fashion trends, as well as what direction fashion might be going in.

Four tips for becoming a successful Fashion Journalist:

Get your Degree

Although getting a degree might not be necessary, having a certification in fashion or journalism could increase your chances of getting your dream job in the industry. The knowledge and experience you’ll gather throughout your time at university will demonstrate that you’ll be a valuable asset to future employers/fashion programs.

Work Experience

While you’ll have collected a large amount of knowledge from your degree, nothing can compare to working in the real world. Even if it isn’t the end role you want to acquire, experience is experience.

Portfolio

Having a portfolio to hand will benefit you massively, it helps you showcase your best work and show future employers that you are eager for the position you are applying for. Starting as a Blogger is a great way to build your portfolio and confidence. This is also an easier way to send an employer examples of your work.

Network

Talking to people in the industry could help you massively when trying to learn the ways of the industry. By sending a message on LinkedIn to reach out to a company by email, you are putting yourself out there, and growing your network of connections. In the future, this could help you get an interview for your dream job, so it’s an important step to take.
