How to get your foot in the door of the fashion industry

Did the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ make you want to run around the streets of New York with a tray of Starbucks coffee for Meryl Streep? You’re not alone. For many of us, we’ve been dreaming of working in the fashion industry for as long as we can remember, but while we may know that we want to work in the fashion industry, and some of us may even know the role we want to work in, we don’t all know how to make this dream a reality.

So, in this blog, we will look at how to get your foot in the door of the fashion industry.

Being Present online

While some sort of qualification in a fashion-related subject is crucial for many, there are a select few individuals who have managed to get a job in the fashion industry on their social presence alone.

Having said this, we would recommend not putting all of your eggs into the social media basket, and instead, using social media to your advantage as a resource of information that is updated by the minute. Most of us get our news from our social media feeds these days, so if you’re looking for updates in the fashion industry, you’re likely to find them on social media first.

By keeping up with social media, you’ll always know what’s new on platforms, whether that means that you know how to use particular apps (like Tik Tok) well enough to fill new positions specialising in that app, or that you’re using it as a resource for information, social media is key for a role in the fashion industry.

It’s also important to regularly update your social media profiles with work, as it could work as your digital portfolio.

Fashion Internships

In our opinion, the best place to start is with an internship. Whether you have a degree in fashion or not, nothing beats gaining real-world experience in the fashion industry.

However, if you are going to take part in a fashion internship, it’s important to take into account that you need to be completely fine with starting at the bottom.

Not only will a fashion internship help you to improve your skills, but it could also provide you with an opportunity for a permanent role in the company.

Take initiative

This is an important skill to have in any industry, but especially in the fashion industry. Take initiative and do something that will help you in the fashion industry. Whether that means writing a blog, making a podcast or creating a social media profile dedicated to showcasing your editing and photography skills in fashion, just do something to help your career.

It doesn’t matter whether your future employer has heard of you or not, showing them that you have shown the initiative to accomplish something in your spare time to better your career will give you a huge step up.
