In 2022, sustainability is no longer just a buzzword, instead, people are interested, passionate, and want real change. In particular, the fashion industry has led to enormous damage on our planet, whether it’s textile waste or toxic dyes, fashion production is responsible for 10 percent of humanity’s carbon dioxide emissions. This means that for those looking to get into the fashion industry many are now wanting to get into the sustainable sector, an area that is growing in popularity and power. Does this sound like you? We’ve got you covered!

This blog will explain to you our top 5 tips to get into the sustainable fashion industry.

  1. Be Specific

Sustainable fashion is such a broad sector, you need to work out what area you’re interested in. Is it human rights? Water pollution? This should be based on research, your experience and what you want. If you’re stuck go back to the drawing board, and ask yourself the basic question, what do you like about sustainable fashion? Or, what needs to be changed in the industry? Similarly, check out books or read blogs, speak about it to people, and get an opinion.

  1. Be educated

If you’re choosing a fashion course at university, chose one that has a focus on sustainable fashion, or at least offers some modules on it; the more educated you are, the better understanding you’ll have, something that will get you a long way in the sustainable fashion industry. If a university course is not for you, use online resources, books and other programs to further educate yourself.

  1. Network

Follow people who work in the industry, connect with them and make yourself known. Similarly, if you can, attend events in person and meet like-minded people in person. These connections can help you get a job, the fashion industry is all about who you know. You never know when a contact will come into good use.

  1. Intern

Although this might sound really obvious if you’re looking to get into the sustainable fashion industry, intern and help out sustainable designers, sustainable brands or anyone who is relevant to your field. You will learn so much and improve your skills, and see how the sustainable fashion industry works with your own eyes. This experience will be invaluable and looks great on your CV, helping you further break into the industry in the future.

  1. Create your own brand

If you feel up to it, why not create your own brand? Doing this will ensure that the sustainability values and practices are where you want them to be. Even if it’s small, everyone needs to start somewhere and it will clearly show your commitment and passion. Although this can be pricey if you’ve got the passion, tools and drive you’ll make yourself succeed!
