Breaking Into The Industry

17 February 2023

Looking to enter the fashion industry? Read this blog to find out what you should be doing before jumping in at the deep end.

The fashion industry has been known as one of the most competitive industries to enter. But once you’re in, you’re in. Many people have questions about the qualifications you’ll need to join the industry, and yes a degree is helpful but isn’t always necessary. By having the correct knowledge and experience no rules say you can’t join without a degree.

However, as mentioned, the competitive nature of the industry is making people with a degree along with the correct skills, more desirable. So whether you’re sure of the route you want to take or just know you want to join the fashion industry, just not sure what sector yet, make sure to look into universities.

Read one of our previous blogs to learn more about what the areas in the industry are, and find the perfect one for you.

Getting experience

If you can, use your free time at university to get an internship, or to create your own project, this will show your willingness to go the extra mile, and you’ll have that little bit more experience.

Networking

Networking is a key skill needed for any job, it will help you grow your connections and could even help you get more experience or land you your dream job. You can do this by speaking with your university lecturers, on Linkedin, and on online chat forums. Use every resource available.

Finding a graduate job

There are a select few formal graduate schemes to help fresh budding fashioneers to enter the industry. However, you should be looking out for jobs that aren’t titled “graduate”, these are usually under “assistant” or “junior”. These jobs are usually entry-level and are often suited for graduates due to the qualifications and level of experience required. It is also important that you should be applying for jobs before you even finish your last year of university. Applying for jobs a month or two in advance will help you have a head start, remember this industry is very competitive. You should do anything to get your foot in the door first.
