Top Tips to Get a Fashion Internship This Summer

01 July 2022

Have you decided that you want to work in the fashion industry and want to gain that all-important experience? A fashion internship is exactly that! An internship in fashion gives you an introduction to the industry and its practices and will also let you get some contacts that can help you with your next steps. Summer is the perfect time for this; you’re away from school, college and uni and have a solid few weeks to get stuck in.

This blog will explain to you all of the top tricks and tips you should use to land your dream fashion internship this summer.

When should I be applying?

For any fashion internship, you should be applying as soon as possible! Keep checking regularly online and don’t wait until the closing date, you want your application seen as quickly as possible. It is also worth bearing in mind that it can take a few weeks or even months to prepare contracts, documents and everything needed for you to start; there isn’t always a quick turnaround. Give yourself plenty of time to get everything started.

However, it’s all well and good to apply early, but you must know how to be successful in the application process, so you have the best chance of securing your dream fashion internship.

What types of internships are there?

Internships vary in length, from a few days to a week or even months, depending on the department, company and their preferences.

If you already have a chosen department, like editorial or styling, you should first try and get an internship in that field to get experience in your desired field. If you haven’t currently chosen this, do some more research and see what you think you’d like, but internships will give you a taste of what that sector is like and you’ll be able to see if it's something for you.

You should remember that, as an intern, the role won’t be your dream job, you’ll most likely be supporting other more senior members of the team with day-to-day tasks, helping everything run smoothly. It’s an industry where you’ll need to work to the top!

How can I get a fashion internship?

Firstly, ensure your CV is as up-to-date and as accurate as possible. It should show off who you are and what you can do, it's representing you and your personality. Also, make it bold and interesting, you need to stand out from the crowd! Fashion internships are highly competitive and each one will receive hundreds if not thousands of applicants.

Along with your CV, you will also need an engaging and compelling cover letter, explaining why you’d like the internship and how you are a great fit for the role. Show your passion and interest, and ensure your spelling, punctuation and grammar is perfect!

Aside from looking for internship adverts and applying you could also email companies directly. This is a bold move but it will show companies how keen and passionate you are, impressing them. As well as this, you won’t have as much competition as fewer people will email directly rather than apply to an advert. Maybe give this one a try if there's a specific company you’d love to intern at.

Finally, another way to become a fashion intern is to connect with people in the industry. Follow them on their social media channels and make yourself known.
