The good thing about joining the fashion industry is there are so many jobs available in lots of different areas. Many jobs aren’t even considered or thought about as much. This blog is here to help you understand the areas of the fashion industry to help you understand which area of the industry you should join. 

Before discussing the more unique, less common areas of the industry, here are the more popular and well-known areas.

  • Fashion Designer

Less common areas:

Pattern Cutter/Grader

This job entails working with designers and garment technologies and involves creating and cutting pattern templates. Within this position, you will refine patterns, and create samples using CAD (computer-aided design) programs.

Fashion Illustrator

This position involves working with fashion designers, capturing what they want to create through sketches of their products. Through this process, you will use CAD software, sketching, and painting.

Visual Merchandiser

This is exactly what you think. This role aims to stop people in the shop and convince them to buy clothes. You will be designing the shop layout, and making eye-catching displays on mannequins and windows. 

Fashion Writer

A Fashion Writer works for newspapers, print magazines, and websites, writing articles on fashion-related topics and coverage of big fashion moments that would have happened within the past week. This is usually an entry-level role.

Trend Forecaster

Within this position, you’ll predict new trends and trends that are going out of the fashion industry. An example of this would be researching what patterns, colours, and fabrics are popular and selling. You would work for a forecasting agency and other specialist companies, providing your clients with data and information on the trends.
